Well Driller and Drill Rig Supervisor
Rules

On August 31, 2005, the Office of the State Engineer adopted updated Rules and Regulations for Well Driller Licensing; Construction, Repair and Plugging of Wells. A public hearing on the rules was held in Santa Fe on January 10, 2005. The regulations include revised well drilling and construction requirements, continuing education requirements for well drillers and drill rig supervisors, revised requirements for registration as a drill rig supervisor, and revised well driller licensing and license renewal requirements. The rules - last modified in 1966 - have been updated to reflect revisions to state law, new criteria for drilling, construction, and plugging of wells, and to address safety and protection issues regarding underground aquifers.

"Due to the increasing dependence on New Mexico’s underground water by the public, recent updates in state law, and new well drilling methods it was necessary to revise the regulations," said State Engineer John D’Antonio. "The adoption of these updated regulations allows my office to better ensure that the public, well drillers, and environment are protected."
