Pecos River Compact
About the Pecos River Compact
Signed by New Mexico and Texas in 1948 and approved by Congress the following year, the Pecos River Compact provides for a commission to administer its provisions. New Mexico’s Pecos River Commissioner is appointed by the Governor to serve for a term of two years.
On a daily basis, water issues and events impact the lives of thousands of citizens of the State of New Mexico. Not only does the state have a naturally limited water supply, but continues to struggle with drought and the requirements of interstate water delivery obligations.
The primary tool for compliance with New Mexico’s obligations under the Pecos River Compact and the 1988 Amended Decree is the 2003 Pecos Settlement Agreement.
